The People’s Report - June 2026
We are all this path together with PRIDE
LETTER FROM THE CO-CHAIR
Greetings, comrades,
I hope all is well. We walk into June steadfast and still determined to build a better tomorrow. We walk this path together, with Pride. 🌈
Before I continue, I want to congratulate our former co-chair, Kendra Clark, for her candidacy for Georgia House District 165 and for running a clean and principled race. While she was not victorious, more than 2,000 people believed in her vision for what Georgia could be. I look forward to building upon the precedent she has set for the future. We love you. Thank you for putting yourself out there.
As we continue to imagine what a better Georgia looks like, we must contend with our reality.
As I write, the longstanding struggle for Yamacraw continues.
As I write, the workers of Chatham Area Transit ask us to stand in solidarity with them as they fight for a fair contract.
As I write, ordinances passed by the city and county last year are already doing much of the work of criminalizing our most underserved neighbors: our homeless population. At the very least, city leadership has said it will not expand that criminalization into our public squares in the way state officials desire.
Speaking of our state officials, since the May letter, Governor Brian Kemp has officially called a special session of the Georgia General Assembly beginning June 17. The session will focus in part on how the state tabulates ballots and on mid-decade redistricting ahead of the 2028 elections, falling in line with other states nationwide attempting to redraw congressional and state legislative districts.
Because of the nature of Georgia’s current congressional map, this effort appears likely to target majority-Black congressional districts in southwest Georgia and metro Atlanta. While it remains unclear how this effort will unfold, I can say unequivocally that Savannah DSA stands against any effort to dilute Black voting power.
How appropriate it is that every June 19, African Americans nationwide come together to celebrate Juneteenth. On that day in 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Texas with news of emancipation for enslaved people. Our ancestors moved forward steadfast and determined to build a better tomorrow. There were many trials ahead, but freedom had come.
Fellow comrades, there will be many trials ahead. But freedom will come. It always will.
In solidarity,
KeyShawn Housey
Co-Chair, Steering Committee

CHANGE
The following matters will be presented to the membership at the June 7 General Membership Meeting.
R26-007 - Extend the Deadline for R26-006
This resolution would extend the deadline associated with R26-007A01 to no later than the July General Membership Meeting.
R26-008 - Dissolve the Labor Working Group
This resolution would dissolve the Labor Working Group as a formal chapter body while affirming that labor organizing remains essential to Savannah DSA’s mission.
The resolution recognizes the work members have already done to support local labor organizing and makes clear that the chapter may revisit the appropriate structure for labor work as participation and capacity grow.
R26-009 - Join the Statewide Campaign to Defend Black Votes
This resolution would commit Savannah DSA to a coordinated statewide campaign against gerrymandering, mid-decade redistricting, and efforts to dilute Black voting power.
DEFEND BLACK VOTES GEORGIA
Georgia lawmakers will return to the State Capitol for a special legislative session beginning June 17.
The proposed mid-decade redistricting effort threatens to divide Black communities, dilute Black voting power, and weaken meaningful representation. Savannah DSA rejects efforts to disguise racial voter dilution as ordinary partisan mapmaking.
Resolution R26-009 would authorize Savannah DSA to:
Join the statewide campaign to defend Black voting power
Mobilize members for the June 17 protest at Liberty Plaza
Support transportation, outreach, and logistical coordination
Work with other Georgia DSA chapters and aligned organizations
Support public education, social media outreach, physical flyering, and coalition outreach
Participate in sustained organizing if the special session extends beyond the initial mobilization
Support local Savannah actions for people unable to travel to Atlanta
Use a portion of any awarded Locals First grant funds to support the campaign, subject to grant terms and chapter financial policies
Co-Chair Nomination
Kendra Clark has been nominated to serve as Co-Chair of Savannah DSA.
Additional details regarding the nomination and election process will be shared with members through the chapter’s official communications channels.
